　　查穆先生（罗伯特·雷德福 Robert Redford 饰）是一名老木匠，他总喜欢给孩子们讲一个关于龙的故事，故事中的龙居住在位于太平洋西北部的茂密丛林中，查穆先生说他曾经亲眼见证过龙的存在。女儿格蕾丝（布莱丝·达拉斯·霍华德 Bryce Dallas Howard 饰）对于这个父亲已经讲了一百万次的故事不屑一顾，她认为这绝对是父亲信口胡说乱编的故事。
　　一次偶然中，格蕾丝遇见了一个名为彼得（奥克斯·弗格雷 Oakes Fegley 饰）的男孩，男孩告诉格蕾丝，他没有亲人也没有家，唯一的朋友便是一条名叫艾略特的飞龙。皮特的叙述让格蕾丝想到了父亲的故事，两者之间有着惊人的相似，为了证实彼得的话，格蕾丝踏上了寻找龙的旅途。
