　　故事发生在巴黎歌剧院中，作为合唱团的新人，克里斯汀（海瑟·西尔斯 Heather Sears 饰）的面前是一条充满了困难和荆棘的道路。一天深夜，她流连于歌剧院之中，黑暗里，一阵美妙而又动听的歌声传入了克里斯汀的耳朵，很快，克里斯汀便发现，这个神秘迷人的男声，似乎在传授她歌唱的技巧。

　　原来，男声的主人是被人称为“剧院魅影”（赫伯特·罗姆 Herbert Lom 饰）的男子，他因为长相奇丑而用面具将脸孔遮挡，在歌剧院中隐居。受到了魅影的指点，克里斯汀很快就在专业上获得了进步，她也因此而受到了大众的瞩目一唱而红。之后，身价倍增的克里斯汀和年轻有为的剧院赞助商坠入了爱河，魅影得知此消息，心中充满了嫉妒和愤怒。
