　　由于心脏病发作，贾克斯（布莱恩·考克斯 Brian Cox 饰）又一次的住进了医院，躺在病床上的他明白自己时日无多，可他经营的酒吧却后继无人。在医院里，贾克斯结识了神情萎靡颓废而又沮丧的年轻人卢卡斯（保罗·达诺 Paul Dano 饰），他来到这里的原因是自杀未遂。卢卡斯的境遇让贾克斯很是感慨，在一股不知所以然的冲动下，卢卡斯成为了贾克斯心目中的继承人选。

　　贾克斯收留了卢卡斯，一步步的教他如何管理一间酒吧，卢卡斯聪明勤奋，很快便能独当一面，与此同时，他和贾克斯之间也产生了坚实而又真诚的友谊。某天，一个名叫爱普尔（伊希尔·勒·贝斯柯 Isild Le Besco 饰）的美丽女子出现在了酒吧里，她乞求贾克斯和卢卡斯为她提供一个藏身之地，可是，这显然违反了贾克斯“不许女人进入酒吧”的条例，但卢卡斯却不这么想，两人的关系就此陷入了僵局。
