波兰电影的里程碑之一。
故事发生在十七世纪，神父Suryn被派往一个女修道院，那里有魔鬼作祟，一个当地牧师因为勾引修女而被施以火刑。院长Joan着魔最深，她总是让修女集体发狂。人们尝试了很多方法驱魔，但即使自我鞭挞也起不了作用。
绝望中神父Suryn去咨询一个年长的法师，后者告诉他所谓“魔鬼”其实是人类本性的表现。后来Suryn发现自己被院长Joan迷住了。为了帮助她，他杀害了两个无辜的人，这样他就永久成为恶魔的牺牲品，从而可以解救Joan。
