　　每一个人，都有追求美好生活的天性，有了好的，就想要更好的……杰米就是这类人中最典型的代表之一，在位于中西部的家乡小镇中，他是那里的王牌推销员。不满足于小镇中的平静祥和的杰米带着他美丽的未婚妻白莉莎一起来到纽约这座大城市，期望可以开拓一片更加广阔的天地。

　　由于以前有着良好的工作记录，杰米很快就被“拜纳伍”销售公司吸纳为正式员工，并成为另一位员工泰德的搭档，巧的是，泰德也是公司的销售榜首。然而与杰米的天真热情完全不同的是，泰德是一个有侵略性、满嘴脏话又愤世嫉俗的人–他对公司给自己指派了这样一个新手做搭档，不满的情绪更是溢于言表。虽然杰米的乐观并没有被泰德的厌世挤压殆尽，可是他却一次又一次地在销售时以失败告终，并最终明白，大城市和自己的家乡小镇是完全不一样的。

　　一个偶然的机会，杰米将泰德带回了家……第一次见面的白莉莎和泰德之间马上产生了电光火石般的激情，很快，两人就沉沦在这场不道德的爱欲之中不能自拔。工作方面仍然没有半点起色的杰米渐渐认清了大城市中的现实，而泰德由于和白莉莎的情事而对杰米感到无比地愧疚，甚至通过把自己的客户让出来而消除一些罪恶感。问题是，泰德的销售业绩也在持续下滑–原来他是因为有过一段伤心的过去，才会将自己所有的注意力都集中在工作上的，如今随着与白莉莎之间的感情日益升温，泰德已经不是太醉心于推销了。

　　即使是在泰德的帮助下，杰米的销售仍然没有丝毫的转机，过重的压力让他的精神状态每况愈下。杰米信任泰德，可同时他也怀疑白莉莎红杏出墙……恰逢“拜纳伍”销售公司的季度销售出现了危机，濒临破产，这一切，都为这段三角关系增加了额外的压力和紧张–爆发的临界点正在一步一步地迫近。
